Procurement professionals, if you are considering a transition from manual and Excel-based RF(x) to online automated e-sourcing platforms, here is the information you need to mitigate fear, uncertainty and doubt in your supplier base. Some suppliers view RFPs as static cost-cutting exercises, which devalue their offering.
Manufacturers, for instance, can vary production yields, quality, uptime, and material supplier reliability (fill rates and lead times) for a comprehensive analysis that allows them to identify weak links and potential failure points to identify proactive measures to mitigate risks and the agility to seize new opportunities.
Demand sensing involves the use of the external data sources – particularly the latest sales and market data – to improve short-term forecasting and then be able to use that improved understanding of consumer behavior to improve their supply planning. The analysis was not all that accurate.
The first one arrived a few years ago when a growing number of companies started treating supply chain design as a continuous business process instead of a standalone project or a once-a-year exercise. It was a strategic/tactical analysis, disconnected from day-to-day operations, and the software tools were difficult to learn and use.
Below I will outline how a vendor managed inventory model, in conjunction with reverse marketing, value analysis, and collaboration will achieve supply chain cost reductions. Reverse marketing starts first with Value Analysis. Your team should have recorded all Value Analysis ideas in detail to get back to the Supplier by (date).
This system uses Multi-Echelon Planning as a base combined with statistical models we developed that are applied at different phases of the exercise. It starts with assessing the inventory health of an organization; root cause analysis is performed at strategic, tactical and operational levels; and then recommendations are proposed.
By integrating order data, load information across modes, yard shipments and the like, internal departments can turn to a single source of the truth and more accurately manage various aspects of the lifecycle.
Too much leads to resources being monopolised on gathering tons of data and a subsequent risk of “paralysis by analysis” Cost to Serve (CTS) is an approach that helps you avoid both extremes. This often gives what is called a “whale curve” of accumulated net profits that shows how: Image Source: [link].
So those faster moving products using this principle we can categorise as A, and so on, through B and to C the slower the sales rate is, we call this ABC analysis. All of these symptoms potentially are a sign that a slotting exercise is overdue. Figure 1, Location of ABC products (Source DC Expert 3 D drawing package).
Step 2: Gap Analysis – Customer Requirements and Supply Chain Trends. Now you know what your customers genuinely expect from your outbound and reverse supply chain, so it’s time to undertake a gap analysis. Ideally, though, evaluating your position against competitors should not solely be a KPI benchmarking exercise.
Many businesses in the US, and elsewhere, were sourcing their componentry from China. To assist with the short-term solution, the answer is an extensive data-gathering exercise. You can see critical stats such as outstanding customer accounts as well as an age analysis of those accounts and interpret the data in a meaningful way.
Firstly, it recommended conducting realistic wargames and exercises to reflect threats and the capability of the logistics enterprise to respond. Without doing so we risk logistics capability being revealed as a constraint on ADF operations, not a source of opportunity and the well from which the joint force draws its strength to fight.
The ADF lacked the logistics resources, organic or those from civilian or international sources, to fulfil the requirements of a realistic approach to preparedness prior to the operation. The ADF’s preparedness prior to this operation has been scrutinised through reports and analysis, at levels range from tactical to committees of Government.
Rather than using intuition to inform decisions, people often retreat behind analysis to avoid choosing between difficult options. Even if analysis is used to inform judgements, decisions at the highest level will tend to be intuitive and influenced by a range of factors. This is especially the case with logistics.
This exercise prompted Whirlpool to question whether having a single logistics provider was the best structure to exceed customer expectations and maximize cost savings. After completion of its customer-centric supply chain analysis, Whirlpool knew innovation was necessary to maintain a competitive advantage.
In order to import medical devices in the higher risk classes, you can expect to be required to produce documents such as certificates of conformance, certificates of analysis, Free Sale certificates, US FDA certificates (if sourced from US) and/or item catalogues or brochures. You can find that information easily here.
Whether you are managing them yourself, or have outsourced the management of your supply chain, it's a really good exercise to understand how it all works. Analysis paralysis can slow you down. Good data is helpful so going to the source (your invoices) gives you the real total costs.
A training needs analysis (TNA) will identify where employee training can make a meaningful contribution towards improving performance. The analysis can also reveal other variables that cause employees not to perform at the optimum levels– organizational culture, personal problems, job satisfaction or financial compensation.

Image source: Flickr | How to Protect Supply Chain from Cyber Attacks The management of data intelligence in the supply chain presents an enormous challenge to those involved. If your supply chain network design has not been under the microscope, and you care about business success, it’s probably time to consider the benefits of a design review and optimisation exercise. The use of a methodology known as “cost to serve analysis” often reveals shocking realities about supply chain costs. . .
Römmele explains that all Continental products go through a threat analysis and risk assessment (TARA). “We Digital signatures and certificates are used to verify that new code is authentic, from a trusted source and unaltered in transit whether by USB, CD or over the air. You don’t always have access to the source,” Boulton observes.
Knowhow of slice and dice data analysis, possibly true but in my opinion these are not comprehensive enough. Here''s presenting the case study of how a seemingly workable condition monitoring exercise can possibly go wrong. The team could have easily concluded this because they were sourcing the original spares from the OEM.
While a number of factors are doubtless contributing to the Kmart demise, only a minor amount of analysis is required to identify supply chain misalignment as being one of the primary issues, which the company has never managed to correct.
